One night my friend @sorryimtexan introduced me to this delicious yet dangerous drink originating from Lubbock, Texas called the DP Shootout. It tastes just like Dr. Pepper® but doesn’t actually contain any of the soda.

It is made up of vodka, amaretto and coke and can be dangerous because it really doesn’t taste like it has any alcohol. It’s easy to whip together when playing bartender. You are also supposed to add two straws to the drink and see who can drink it faster (hence, shootout) but I prefer to sip on it at a more leisurely pace.

Key Ingredients in This Recipe

  • Vodka – Vodka is a clear, distilled spirit that doesn’t necessarily have as many hard and fast rules as other liquors. It’s created by extracting starch from various grains, fruits and vegetables; commonly potatoes, wheat or rice. Vodka at its base is less flavorful than other spirits (unless it’s flavored vodka) which lets the other flavors shine in this recipe.
  • Amaretto – Amaretto is an Italian liqueur with a sweet, almond flavor. It’s frequently found in an amaretto sour. In this recipe it mixes with the coke to mimic an alcohol filled version of Dr. Pepper.

How to Make This DP Shootout Recipe

  1. Add ingredients. Add ice to a lowball glass and add the vodka, Amaretto and coke to the glass.
  2. Stir. Stir to combine.
  3. Serve. Serve immediately with a straw.
