Instead of fighting for reservations at an overbooked restaurant, squeezing into communal tables, and paying for pricey set menus just for the holiday, consider staying in and cooking together instead. There’s something far more romantic about choosing a menu you actually love (try picking a menu inspired by a trip you took together or someplace you want to visit together), opening a bottle of wine or champagne, and spending the evening side by side in the kitchen. While going out for a special occasion can be fun, I’d rather save that for a night when the rest of the world isn’t doing the same thing. Sometimes, the simplest plans make the best memories.

This Valentine’s Day roundup features some of my favorite romantic dishes—from shareable appetizers to impressive entrées and desserts. Whether you’re in the mood for seafood, creamy pastas, tender chicken, or a decadent sweet finish, you’ll find plenty of inspiration for a cozy night in. Valentine’s Day Appetizers

Start your Valentine’s Day dinner with elegant, shareable appetizers that set the tone for the night. These recipes are perfect for grazing, sipping wine, and easing into a romantic meal at home.

  • Whipped Ricotta Toast – Eat it as a dip or pipe onto toasts for a simple but beautiful presentation.
  • Marinated Olives and Feta –  Arrange in a checkerboard patter or serve them simply in a bowl with toothpicks, crostini or warm pita on the side! The perfect pairing with dirty martinis.
  • Tuna Tostadas with Scallion Sauce – Start things with a light tostada and follow it up with seared steak tacos!
  • Orange Calabrian Chili Crudo – This crudo (raw fish) comes together in under 10 minutes and tastes like it was made in a restaurant but only has a few ingredients. Pair with a few glasses of a funky orange wine.
  • Oysters Rockefeller – Oysters have long been associated with romance, and this classic preparation elevates them with a rich, buttery topping that feels special without being overly complicated.

Tips for a Date Night Cooking Together

  • Pick recipes that allow you to share tasks.
  • Open a bottle of wine or champagne to set the mood.
  • Put on music and keep the vibe relaxed.
  • Don’t worry about perfection—enjoy the process.
  • Focus on spending time together, not just the final dish.

Valentine’s Day Entrée Recipes

These Valentine’s Day entrées are designed to feel special without being complicated, featuring flavorful mains that are impressive yet approachable. From seafood to pasta and cozy classics, they’re ideal for a memorable dinner for two.

Meat

  • Seared Duck Breast with Blueberry Pan Sauce – Pan-seared duck breast is surprisingly simple to cook, with a crispy, golden skin and rich, slightly gamey meat that pairs perfectly with a fruity blueberry-rosemary pan sauce perfect for dinner for 2.
  • Red Wine Braised Short Ribs with Celery Root Purée – The tender meat falls off the bone and can be eaten with just a fork, no need for cutting. Classic red wine braised short ribs are an elegant pairing over the light yet creamy celery root purée pictured here or mashed potatoes.
  • Butter Based Steak Au Poivre – My spin on the classic French dish consists of steak coated in freshly cracked pepper (for the most flavor). It’s pan seared in a cast iron pan and basted in butter to create a flavorful golden-brown crust on the outside of the steak. Pair with fries and a simple side salad.
  • Mini Beef Wellington – Beef Wellington is a luxurious entrée of seared beef with in sautéed mushroom duxelle, layered with prosciutto and wrapped in golden brown puff pastry. The dish is typically a large format recipe but this recipe, I make this more manageable for individual serving perfect for a romantic and impressive Valentine’s day made with filet mignon.

Seafood

  • Shrimp Scampi Risotto – Sautéed shrimp in a white wine and garlic scampi sauce served over creamy Parmesan risotto. This is a tried and true recipe I turn to all the time for romantic dinners in.
  • Butter-Poached Lobster Tails – Treat yourself with lobster tails poached until tender in melted butter, white wine and garlic, finished with lemon juice and fresh herbs. Serve on it’s own or over pasta.
  • Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice – Inspired by the crispy rice and spicy tuna at Nobu, packed pieces of sushi rice are fried and topped with a spicy ground tuna mixture. If you want to make a full sushi-inspired menu check out my “Nobu at home” menu and my at home hand roll bar.
  • Pan Seared White Fish – Searing the fish fillets in a pan cooks the thin fillets quickly without a lingering fishy smell most home cooks fear. I pair the fish with a simple lemon butter sauce made in the pan. Serve with your favorite vegetables.
  • Creamy Lobster Pasta – Valentine’s Day is a fun time to opt for luxurious ingredients and spoil yourselves with dinner in. The sauce for the pasta is similar to lobster bisque. It’s a creamy smooth sauce flavored with seafood stock and aromatics with chunks of lobster meat served over bucatini (or your other favorite pasta shape).
  • Crispy Salmon with Soy Tamarind Sauce – Filets of salmon are coated in cornstarch and fried in a pan until crispy all over. I serve it with a simple soy tamarind sauce alongside sautéed spinach and rice.
  • Salmon with Beurre Blanc Sauce Over Sautéed Fennel – The sautéed fennel lightly caramelizes and complements the acidic beurre blanc and fatty, crispy salmon.
  • Lobster Pot Pie – The filling of this pot pie is seasoned with a hint of cayenne and chopped fresh tarragon, which compliments and enhances the flavor of the lobster.

Chicken

  • Coq Au Vin Blanc – Crispy seared chicken thighs are paired with a creamy white wine sauce flavored with bits of bacon, mushrooms and onions. Serve with plenty of extra bread for dipping in the rich sauce!
  • Easy Chicken Piccata – With a rich lemon butter caper pan sauce this chicken dish feels elegant even though it’s made with ease!
  • Roast Chicken Legs with White Beans and KaleWhole chicken legs are much quicker than a whole chicken but still are impressive. The white beans and kale make for a complete meal while keeping things light.

Vegetarian Options

  • Penne Alla Vodka – Classic creamy vodka sauce is easily made at home with a few pantry staples. I pair it with grilled or pan seared chicken breasts for added protein.
  • Mixed Mushroom Risotto – Risotto makes a great alternative to pasta for someone on a gluten-free diet. A creamy consistency is coaxed out of the grains of rice creating a delicious base paired with sautéed mushrooms.
  • Cacio e Pepe – Cacio e Pepe is basically adult mac and cheese! The good news is it’s a great easy and romantic meal to make that won’t break the bank.
  • Spicy Rigatoni – Can’t get a reservation at Carbone? Make my take on their famed spicy rigatoni at home. The key to this dish is the onion soubise – onions simmered over a long period of time with water and butter with spice added from Calabrian chilies.
  • Pan-Fried Ricotta Gnocchi – Pillowy ricotta gnocchi comes together with a few ingredients. This is a fun one to prep together!

Valentine’s Day Dessert Ideas

End the night on a sweet note with Valentine’s Day desserts made for sharing. From rich chocolate desserts to lighter, fruit-forward options, these recipes are the perfect finish to a romantic meal at home.

  • Individual Sticky Toffee Pudding – This sticky sweet date sponge cake is ladled with butterscotch sauce and topped with a mascarpone whipped cream to balance the rich dessert.
  • Raspberry Cream Cheese Brownies – Brownies topped with a swirl of cream cheese and raspberries makes for a festive Valentine’s day dessert.
  • Tuxedo Creme Brûlée – The crème brûlée has a layer of chocolate ganache on the bottom and then a layer of vanilla custard followed by caramelized sugar. It can be made ahead of time and topped with the sugar and torched just before serving.
  • Strawberries and Cream – Forget chocolate dipped strawberries, try this easy dessert made with sliced strawberries topped with a lightly whipped (& slightly boozy!) whipped cream with a bit of sugar.
  • Salted Butterscotch Pot De CreméThe custard has a rich velvety texture similar to crème brûlée and the flavor is a light butterscotch that borders on caramel.
  • Strawberries and Cream Cheese Cookies – These cream cheese-based cookies are laced with crushed up freeze-dried strawberries for a sweet and creamy festive cookie.
