This recipe is inspired by my favorite version from Kreation, a juice shop close to my apartment in Santa Monica (with locations all over the city).

What’s a Smoothie Bowl?

These frozen, blended bowls made from a mixture of açai and other fruit is thicker than a smoothie. Top with fresh fruit and eat with a spoon. Açai bowls originated as a dessert, called açaí na tigela in Brazil. In recent years they have been popularized in warm places like Hawaii and California for healthy breakfasts.

Key Ingredients in This Recipe

  • Açai – Frozen packs of pre-blended açai can be found in the frozen section of most grocery stores. Look for brands with a limited ingredient list and lower sugar content. I like using Sambazon® Original Smoothie packs for my açai bowls.
  • Fruit – Any variety of fruits can be used for this recipe though I especially like the combination of banana, green apple and strawberry. The banana adds a creamy texture while the apple adds a crisp crunch.
  • Shredded coconut – I use unsweetened, shredded coconut in this recipe so the bread isn’t overly sweet.
  • Granola – Use your favorite store-bought granola or make my recipe for homemade honey granola here.

How to Make Açai Smoothie Bowls

  1. Blend ingredients for the base of the bowl. Run smoothie packs under water for five seconds then break up the packs into the blender. Add the frozen assorted mixed berries, almond butter and almond milk. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides as necessary.
  2. Divide between bowls. The consistency of the mixture should be just thicker than a smoothie (about the consistency of frozen yogurt). Then use a rubber spatula to spoon the mixture into bowls.
  3. Assemble and serve. Finally, top the açai bowls with strawberries, apple, banana, granola, coconut, agave and bee pollen (if using). Serve immediately.
